Do you ever feel like people just don’t get you?
Like, say, if you had this really cute, fun blog on the interwebs and had like, a TON of cool internet friends you were always baking for and SOMEONE in your family decided to EAT some of your ingredients so you couldn’t make what you’d wanted to?
Yeah, it’s only quality invisible friendships and world domination I’m trying to achieve, family. Thanks for eating my Reese’s Pieces.
UGH.
Or like when you tell someone you have a food blog and you post recipes six days a flippin’ week and someone says “OH MY GOSH, you’re just like Rachael Ray!!” and you’re like “Rachael Ray does not have a food blog. She hosts a TV show and has a magazine and shows on Food Network. I am definitely not like Rachael Ray” and they temporarily lose hearing and continue to tell you how much you’re just like someone you’re not at all like.
Or like when some drunk dude comes up to you at a bar and is like “HOLY SH*T you look JUST LIKE Kat Von D” and you’re like “are you serious right now? I look nothing like Kat Von D” and drunk dude is like, “no, you really look just like Kat Von D. I want a picture with you” and you’re thinking, just because I am a female with all of THREE tattoos does not constitute my looking like a tatted woman on TV.
(Though I guess it beats the one lone time I was told I looked like Lindsay Lohan. Seriously, LiLo? I’d rather they told me I looked just like Ozzy Osbourne).
People just don’t get it, you know? And it’s about damn time they do. Hopefully some Chocolate Peanut Butter 7-Layer Bars will make it click for them. Or send them straight to a sugar coma. Whatever comes first.
These bars are unrelentingly gooey and rich and topped with a multitude of delicious ingredients sure to send your belly to its happy place.
Or, if you’re me, hoping they’ll send you to TV so you can maybe actually start being/looking like Rach or Kat. Whatevz.
Chocolate Peanut Butter 7-Layer Bars
1 box Devil’s food cake mix
1 egg
1/2 cup butter, melted
1 cup coarsely crushed pretzels
1 cup peanut butter chips
1 cup chocolate chips
1 cup Reese’s Pieces
1 cup honey roasted peanuts
1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Liberally grease a 13×9 inch baking pan with cooking spray; set aside.
2. In a large bowl, combine the cake mix, egg and butter. Stir in the crushed pretzels. Spread the mixture evenly along the bottom of the greased pan and bake for about 8 minutes.
3. Sprinkle the par-baked bars with the peanut butter chips, chocolate chips, Reese’s Pieces and peanuts. Drizzle the top of the bars with the milk. Return to the oven for an additional 15 minutes or until golden and bubbly, and center is set.
4. Cool completely before cutting into bars. Serve warm or at room temperature. Best served within 1-2 days.
I love love love! these bars! They’re so fudgy and rich–and totally screaming your name if you’re a sweet & salty fan like myself. The bottom is almost cake-y but still has a lot of ooey gooey fudgy action going on, and I love the addition of the honey roasted peanuts… simply irresistible!
And okay, IÂ maybe kinda look like Kat Von D.
xo, Hayley

And for what its worth…..Kat is freaking beautiful!!! Have a great day!!
The Domestic Rebel says
Haha thanks girl 🙂 as for the sabotage, I always have a designated baking shelf with a kinda nasty letter attached saying, “IF IT’S ON THIS SHELF, DON’T EAT IT!!” lol. They know to back off now!

Mrs. Williams says
I get the Rachael Ray comment all the time too. Um, no.
These are beautiful. I love Reese’s Pieces. And pretzels. And chocolate.
The Domestic Rebel says
Lol, what’s with people choosing Rachael Ray? We like to cook and we’re females. That’s. About. It. Oh well, time for us to call Food Network ourselves 🙂
Karly Campbell says
So, you know I’m making these immediately, right? Like, I will totally die if I don’t get some of these in my face.
Jocelyn says
Oh my goodness…these look stinking amazing!!! I must buy more Reeses STAT!!!! Want to know the funny thing? I have something very similar baking in my oven right now…similar but not the same:-) Love how our minds work:-)

Aimee @ ShugarySweets says
Oh my gosh these look amazing!!!!
Ashley @ Kitchen Meets Girl says
I LOVE Reese’s Pieces, so there’s no doubt I’d love these bars. And UM, if someone in this house ate all of my baking candies/etc., we’d have a major problem. Except my husband is weird and DOESN’T EAT CANDY (????), so usually the culprit is me.
lapetitebaker says
These look like a delicious sugar high waiting to happen. And the next time somebody say’s you look like Kat Von D, charge them for taking a picture with you..haha.
The Domestic Rebel says
BEST IDEA EVER.
Laura (Tutti Dolci) says
You can’t beat 7 layers of deliciousness!
Karyn - Pint Sized Baker says
Those bars look INSANE. Kinda like all the weirdos around you are insane.
The Domestic Rebel says
Exactly like that 🙂
Sally says
Hayley! I missed these yesterday. So sad! I swear, there are SO many things you can do with boxed cake mix. You are like the QUEEN of it all. And you know I love peanut butter and chocolate. Can you make these and send them to me please??? I ran out of cake mix last week and umm… too lazy to go buy more 🙂

Sandra Roller says
Had to leave out peanuts as my daughter has ulcerative colitis so I guess it’s 6 layers but still good!!!
The Domestic Rebel says
6 layer bars rule just as much as 7 layer! 🙂 glad you liked ’em Sandra!!
Back For Seconds says
I swear this is the only thing I’ve wanted to eat in the past couple days. They look freakin awesome! I would gladly accept a care package filled with these bad boys 🙂
Amanda says
Do you add the oil, water and 3 eggs the Devils Food Cake mix calls for as well or just the egg and butter in your directions? Making these for this Thursday for a going away party at work! 🙂
The Domestic Rebel says
Hey Amanda! Sorry for the delay. No, you just add the egg and butter only to the cake mix–nothing else. This will give you your bar base 🙂 hope you enjoy!!
rachel slagle says
these sound amazing! can’t wait to try them.
Lauri Willingham (@MyPinnedLife) says
This is the second recipe of yours I have loved, drooled over, and resolved to make in the last 20 minutes. Great recipe. Thanks! Pinned and Tweeted!
katie says
These look sinfully delicious! I can’t wait to give them a try!
Josh says
hey! i love this already, but im not really a fan of pretzels. ideas on a substitute?
The Domestic Rebel says
Hey Josh! You can completely omit the pretzels if you’d like, or substitute them with gently crushed cookies (Nutter Butters would work!)
Lynn says
Hi! Gonna make these for thanksgiving! Do you use milk or semi-sweet choc chips? Wasn’t sure! Thanks!
The Domestic Rebel says
Hey Lynn! Either works, but I like using semi-sweet… not as sweet as milk chocolate chips 🙂 let me know how it turns out!
MomTeresa says
I just made this. AWESOME!!!!! They are so rich! I used 7 oz. of condensed milk, but I think I could have used the whole 14 oz. can. Also a tip – I had to use my hands to press the cake batter mixture into the bottom of the pan because it’s thick. THANKS!!!
The Domestic Rebel says
Hey girl! I’m so glad it turned out okay for you–good tip with the pressing the dough and good to know it worked just as well with half a can of milk. They ARE rich but totally awesome! Thanks for your comment!
Tam Frick says
I liked the recipe but the brownie part to me was too dry. Wonder if adding an extra egg would make it a little moister?
The Domestic Rebel says
Hey Tam! You could certainly try, or just decrease the original baking time to about 10 minutes instead of 15. Hope it works better for you next time!
Jennifer Stott (@JenSto2t) says
Now THAT is what I’m talking about. You can bake for me anytime! 😉
Shelly Reese says
In the oven now, can’t wait to try them! Yummy…thanks for the recipe 🙂
Daphne says
Hi Domestic Rebel-
This recipe calls for “1 can (7 oz) sweetened condensed milk
But perhaps you meant the little can that is actually 14 oz, not 7?
The Domestic Rebel says
Hi Daphne! Yes, I meant the 14oz can–silly mistake on my part! I’ll fix this ASAP. 🙂
Miranda says
I’ll definitely have to make these. I love me some peanut butter!
Jenni @ Traveler in the Kitchen says
I saw this recipe over on Crazy for Crust and made it last weekend. Pretty amazing! Love the pretzels in the crust.
Heather Jacques says
I think something is wrong..lol. I put the cake mix in a bowl, added the egg and butter; the mixture was soooooo dry. I added a little water and that helped. Then I had my 13X9 pan all greased up, poured the mixture in it, there was no way that I had enough to spread across that pan. So I resorted to a smaller pan. Cooked them for four minutes. Took them out. Forgot to lessen the amount of toppings to compensate for the smaller pan. Overloaded it with chocolate (not that I’m complaining per se..lol). Cooked them for ten more minutes. Smelled great. I’m sending them to a party so I will let you know how they go.
thedomesticrebel says
Hey Heather! The mixture is quite stiff. It should absorb all the cake mix crumbs but it won’t be nearly as pourable as a standard cake mix. Adding water should make it okay! Hope it turns out regardless!
Heather Jacques says
Weeeeellllll..lol. I cooked it. Let it cool and then started to cut it into bars..They were waaaayyyyy too gooey. So I resorted to dumping the whole thing in a dish and eating it with a spoon..lol. “Mus Surprise”..lol. It doesn’t have to look pretty as long as it’s edible, right? LoL.
Heather Jacques says
“Mud Surprise”**
Jonie says
Thanks for the great idea!! I loved how easy this looked but I didn’t have those ingredients so I subtracted the pretzels and put, milk chocolate chips, white chocolate chips and toffee bits on top instead! SO DANG GOOD!!! Great inspiration recipe!!
thedomesticrebel says
Jonie, I LOVE your idea of using toffee bits instead! An awesome way to add crunch and a little hint of salt. Brilliant! So glad you enjoyed them 🙂
Amy says
Should they be gooey on top when they come out of the oven? I’m worried they won’t set up before I try to cut them…I’m sure they will be delicious regardless. .lol
