Since it was during the depression they used the little bit they had to make a dessert and using eggs was out of the question because IF they had any eggs they would need them for a meal instead of dessert. That’s why We made the comment about it being called depression pie. Also look up custard pie or egg pie and you will see they are VERY similar just that custard has eggs

Sugar cream pie is called depression pie because it was created during the depression. Therefore adding eggs means it is no longer a sugar cream pie it is now a custard/egg pie.

Hi Bev, it can be made a couple days in advance, but the topping may not be as crisp as it stays in the fridge.

I make this every year for Thanksgiving and Christmas and it NEVER fails to delight tye taste bud’s. . I’m going to incorporate it into more throughout the year. I LOVE this recipe. It’s almost in memory now.!!!!!
