Dirt Cupcakes

Do you ever feel like you’re hanging out with someone’s cellphone? Except instead of actually being interesting, like there’s a possibility you could snoop through their juicy texts or play Snake, it’s really quite boring and insulting?

Me too.

I won’t name names, but there’s been a couple recent instances when I’ve gone to hang out with friends and it’s like I’m hanging out with their smartphone. Between our recap chats, they check their phone and send a quick text or five.

Dude. I’m not saying I’m like, drop-everything-important, but seriously, your boyfriend can friggin’ wait. There’s been times (many) when my family has texted me pathetically begging, “when’s dinner going to be ready?!” and they’re obviously DYING OF HUNGER, and I don’t even respond then. My family’s like, dying and I’m ignoring them and you’re responding to some random, “what’s up” from your bored boyfriend? Priorities, yo.

Usually I’m not super-friend material in that it takes awhile for me to even want to make plans with people, much less actually get eager to see them (I know, I’m awful), so when I finally do see them, I’m so exhausted from the fact that I prepared myself to see them and catch up on my life that, when their phone inevitably makes an appearance, I really can’t give two poops. I’m like mentally exhausted just from thinking about meeting with them, so now seeing their phone is just like, not even a real issue compared to the fact that I drank my entire grande tea in twenty-seconds flat and now I have to pee like a racehorse. I mean, come on.

Still, when you’re with someone you haven’t seen in awhile and you’ve just confessed you had a mental breakdown over cupcakes not too long ago (may or may not be true, who knows), it’s kinda sorta bad form to whip your phone out right after while halfheartedly saying “that sucks” as you scroll through your contacts. Am I really that boring? Jeezalou.

This has nothing to do with these cupcakes, as usual, but Halloween is approaching and if you’re looking for a gross-yet-fun treat to make with your kiddies, these cupcakes are perfect for you!

(Or if you’ve secretly craved burying your friend’s phone in dirt). Whatever.

Dirt Cupcakes

24 cupcakes, baked and cooled (I used chocolate from a mix)
2 sticks butter, softened
1/3 cup cocoa powder
1 tsp vanilla extract
About 2-3 Tbsp milk
About 5 cups powdered sugar
A heaping cup Oreo cookie crumbs
Gummy worms
Bug sprinkles

1. In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine the butter, cocoa powder and vanilla until creamed, about 2 minutes. Gradually add the powdered sugar, about a cup at a time, until light and fluffy. If too stiff, add the milk one Tablespoon at a time.
2. Pipe the frosting onto cooled cupcakes. Top the frosted cupcakes with gummy worms (I used whole worms but also snipped some in half or quarters to stick parts into the icing so it looked like they were crawling out of the icing).
3. Sprinkle the adorned and frosted cakes with the Oreo crumbs. Top with jumbo bug sprinkles.
**Note: the idea is nothing new, but I wanted my own fun version of these cupcakes on the Interwebs.
**To make the cupcakes creepier, gently hold a worm (flat side down) on the center of the unfrosted cupcake, then pipe the frosting on top of the worm’s body, so half the body is tucked under the frosting, and the other half can lay flat onto the frosted cupcake. It looks cool!**

I made these per request of one of my mom’s coworkers (hi, Kelli!) for her grandson’s birthday (he loves bugs!) and I thought they were too cute and perfect for Halloween! If you wanted it to be super gross, consider adding a chocolate pudding into the center of each cake.

Enjoy!!

xo, Hayley

  1. Ugh. People are so rude.
Maybe it’s childish but I love dirt! I pretend to make it for my 3 year old but it’s seriously one of my favorite things. These look crazy good. I bet that little boy was thrilled to have these for his birthday!

  2. I’d say you won’t be meeting that friend again! I’m not sure who’d love this “dirt”more, me or my kids!!! Better test it to find out! My daughter’s birthday is today, I think I’ll get stuff to make these!! Nothing says happy birthday like dirt!

  3. I couldn’t agree more – one of my top pet peeves is when someone won’t put their damn phone away for 5 minutes when we’re hanging out. If we ever get to hang out in person you’ll be happy to know that my phone will not be front + center. =) And these cupcakes look fab!

  4. Okay these are just too cute and so creative! And I totally know what you mean about the whole “texting-constantly-while-with-friends” thing. My best friend does it all the time!

  5. I completely agree. It is a huge pet peeve of mine! So disrespectful!!

These are too cute and I bet the kids love them!

  6. I always love “Dirt Dessert” but have never seen it in cupcake form! Love it!

  9. I’m with you on the phone thing! I won’t need mine at all when I see you in Austin! =) Love these cupcakes–they are right up Doodle’s alley. He’s into bugs lately, ugh!

  10. This made me want gummy worms so bad haha I used to eat them obsessively. Love it!

  11. I have made a cake version of this every year for Halloween since I was ten. An oldie but a goodie. And you can never wrong with gummy worms and Oreo crumbs. So good!

  12. Hey, I’m making a book, and I would like to use your dirt cupcake recipe. Is that okay if I credit your website?
